Our Story

Since 1835

Beginning with a history that spans nearly two centuries, George Steuart & Company’s roots are traced back to January 12, 1818, when the company’s founder, James Steuart, arrived in Sri Lanka from Scotland. A/s he journeyed through the island, he was fascinated by the abundance of resources available and embarked on a remarkable journey that would set the foundation for Sri Lanka’s commercial reawakening.
The bigning

In 1835, George Steuart & Company Limited was Sri Lanka’s first mercantile establishment, founded by James Steuart and his brother George. The company quickly grew and became a leading exporter of coffee from Ceylon. Despite facing great adversity during the coffee rust in the 1870s, the company strategically converted its export interests to tea. This move proved noteworthy and ultimately changed exporting landscape in Sri Lanka for the last 200 years.

For nearly two centuries, George Steuart & Company has significantly contributed to establishing Sri Lanka as one of the world’s foremost producers of the finest quality teas. The company has maintained its distinction from the rich British traditions it originates from, preserving the artistry of tea making and exacting the standards of the British Empire and its aristocratic flair while incorporating the signature goodness of pure Ceylon tea. Today, George Steuart & Company continues to delight the senses of global connoisseurs.
